In the fast-paced, competitive world of sports marketing, standing out requires more than just a sharp business mind—it demands authenticity, creativity, and a relentless work ethic. Keyonte "Key" Frager embodies all three. His journey from an ambitious entrepreneur to a sought-after strategist in the branding and media space is a testament to the power of perseverance, adaptability, and staying true to one’s vision.
The Power of Initiative: Creating Opportunities
Frager's entrance into sports marketing wasn’t conventional. He didn’t follow a pre-paved corporate path or rely on a high-profile internship to get his foot in the door. Instead, he built his career from the ground up, leveraging word-of-mouth endorsements to turn one opportunity into many. It all started with a single client. From there, as people began asking, "Who’s your guy?" his name quickly gained traction. He emphasizes the importance of initiative in a field where so many are vying for attention. “You have to show what you can bring to the table,” Frager states. “If you don’t have the credentials or a long resume, then bring the results. Show brands why they should trust you.” For Frager, success in sports marketing isn’t just about making connections; it’s about presenting value-driven opportunities that brands can’t ignore. By approaching potential clients with well-researched, tailored strategies instead of just requests for meetings, he proved his worth before they even asked.

The Defining Moments: Breaking Into the Big Leagues
Transitioning from the DMV, to Seattle was a significant leap in Frager’s career. It was a moment of both challenge and opportunity, where he had to prove himself in an unfamiliar market. The key, he says, was self-education—constantly learning about market trends, negotiation tactics, and brand storytelling. His big break came in the form of a partnership with Nordstrom. Aligning with such a recognizable brand validated his expertise, showing that he could secure deals beyond local or small-scale projects. Shortly after, he solidified another major partnership—this time with Gatorade. This wasn’t just any collaboration; Frager helped secure an advertising deal for a Black female college athlete, a move that highlighted the importance of representation in sports marketing. “That was just a big deal,” he reflects. “It showed people that I knew what I was talking about, that I understood what brands are looking for.” From there, Frager’s resume of partnerships only expanded, including collaborations with Microsoft. At their Seattle headquarters, he orchestrated NBA 2K tournaments featuring professional athletes competing against youth players—an innovative fusion of gaming, sports, and branding. It wasn’t just a fun event; it was an experience designed to engage and inspire a new generation of fans and future professionals.
“The confidence comes in when you know your worth,” he says. “If a brand isn’t working with me, it’s either because they don’t want to or they don’t have the budget. And that’s fine, because I know the value I bring.”
The Art of Branding: Authenticity Over Conformity
One of the biggest challenges in sports marketing and branding, according to Frager, is the tendency for individuals to water down their uniqueness in order to fit in. “A lot of people break things that are already fixed or working,” he notes. Instead of constantly reinventing themselves to chase opportunities, Frager encourages people to lean into their strengths and let their personal brand evolve naturally. “Not everyone is meant to be in front of the camera,” he says. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t be valuable behind the scenes.” Frager believes that the key to long-term success is remaining authentic. Authenticity breeds trust, and trust builds relationships—the most critical component in an industry built on connections and collaborations.
Building a Legacy: "Story League" and the Future
Frager’s work extends far beyond securing deals and making brands look good. He’s on a mission to create lasting impact, particularly for young professionals and underrepresented voices in sports and media. With "Story League," the media company he co-founded with his business partner Juwann Nelson, Frager is blending sports management with storytelling. This isn’t just another content production company—it’s a platform for authentic, meaningful narratives. Through short films, documentaries, and strategic brand collaborations, Story League is reshaping the way athlete stories are told. “There’s a misconception that working with athletes means you’re stuck in the sports world,” Frager explains. “But athletes are people first. Their stories transcend sports, and that’s what we want to showcase.” His commitment to the next generation is evident in his workshops and speaking engagements. Soon, he’ll launch a university tour, where he’ll challenge students to think critically about sports marketing through real-world exercises. “I’ll ask them to pick two athletes, pair them with two brands, and craft a compelling pitch,” he says. “It’s a way to take what they’re learning in the classroom and apply it in a tangible way.”
Overcoming Barriers: Rejection as Fuel
Rejection is inevitable in any industry, but Frager views it differently than most. To him, every “no” is simply a step closer to a “yes.” Instead of letting setbacks discourage him, he uses them as fuel to push forward. “The job market is tough, but that just means you have to be tougher,” he says. “You don’t need a corporate job to make an impact—you just need to create your own opportunities.” His brief two-month stint with the Washington Wizards was enough to show him that the traditional corporate route wasn’t for him. He knew he could create his own path, and he’s done just that—without compromising his vision.

The Bigger Picture: Elevating Black Voices and Diverse Narratives
Frager’s work isn’t just about personal success. It’s about breaking barriers and amplifying voices that deserve to be heard. Story League prioritizes diversity, ensuring that Black voices, as well as voices from all backgrounds, have a platform. His goal is to create a space where people’s experiences are captured with depth and authenticity, whether they’re professional athletes or community leaders. A striking image on Story League’s platform encapsulates this vision: kids wearing jerseys with their last names, gifted by the Chicago Bulls. It’s a simple yet powerful reminder that representation matters, that their names—and their stories—are important.
A Blueprint for the Future
Between inspiration and discouragement, there’s a gap. That’s where transformation happens, and that’s exactly where Frager is working. By providing young people with the tools, knowledge, and access they need, he’s ensuring that they don’t just dream, but that they have a clear path to making those dreams a reality. For Frager, the work is far from over. He’s not just here to participate—he’s here to innovate, disrupt, and build something that lasts. His story is more than just a testament to his own success; it’s a blueprint for anyone willing to take the leap, stay authentic, and carve out their own lane in an ever-evolving industry.
